THE HR SPOTLIGHT

🧯 From Slump to Spark: Burnout Prevention & Wellness Reset

The situation: Between post-Fourth-of-July blues and rising temps, employees hit a hard wall in July. Energy dips, motivation slides, and yes—burnout quietly creeps in. According to Moodle’s 2025 report, as much as two-thirds or 66 of American employees are experiencing burnout for different reasons. For minority workers, this strain is often compounded—highlighted during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

đŸ› ïž What HR can do: It’s time for a burnout reset. Here’s how to recharge your people and protect your retention rates:

  • Promote actual time off. Model it from the top—managers taking PTO signals it's okay to disconnect.

  • Normalize mental health tools. Encourage the use of apps like Calm or Headspace (discounts or reimbursements, anyone?).

  • Create recharge zones. Even a quiet room with comfy seating = instantaneous morale lift.

  • Train managers to spot burnout. Tired eyes, short replies, missed deadlines—don’t ignore the signs.

Don’t wait for Self-Care Day on July 24 to make a move. Your team’s summer sanity depends on it.

  • What’s unfolding: A recent report reveals that empathy gaps among U.S. employers could cost companies up to $180B annually in lost productivity, disengagement, and turnover.

  • Why it matters: HR teams must treat empathy as a performance driver—not just a soft skill. Without emotional intelligence, business strategies fall flat.

đŸ‘„ Digital Employees Are Coming - Forbes

COMPLIANCE CORNER

🛒 NYC Apps Face $27/hr Minimum - NY Times

  • What’s unfolding: NYC is set to require app-based grocery delivery workers to earn at least $27.46/hr, a big jump from current rates. The move aims to counter low wages and algorithmic exploitation in gig work.

  • HR implications: Employers relying on gig platforms must monitor rising pay standards, as cost increases may ripple into contracts and benefits. HR leaders should audit any outsourced vendor practices to prevent issues.

đŸ›ïž Supreme Court Tension on Workforce Cuts - Bloomberg Law

  • What’s unfolding: The Supreme Court is weighing in on agency leaders’ authority to implement workforce reductions, potentially restricting executive power over furloughs and layoffs without legislative blessing.

  • HR implications: Public-sector HR must brace for a precedent that limits leadership’s ability to adjust staffing levels and budgets on short notice. HR pros should proactively review policy flexibility and contingency plans.

đŸ˜· Missouri Ousts Paid Sick Leave Law - The Guardian

  • What’s unfolding: Missouri Gov. Kehoe signed the legislation repealing a mandated paid sick leave and inflation-adjusted minimum wage. The repeal takes effect Aug. 28, 2025.

  • HR implications: Missouri HR teams should start communicating changes, revise handbooks, and consider offering equivalent voluntary benefits to mitigate morale and retention risks.

TREND WATCH

đŸ—Łïž The Supervisor Shortage: Leadership Roles Losing Their Shine

Digesting the data: A recent Express Employment Professionals white paper reveals a brewing crisis—55 of supervisors who have left or are planning to leave cite lack of growth as their main reason, while nearly 75 of Gen Z would rather deepen their own skills than manage people. Despite 86 believing tools are available, only one-third receive training in critical areas like feedback and conflict resolution.

Outlook for HR: HR leaders should treat supervisor retention with a matter of urgency. Bolstering leadership pipelines with targeted training, mentorship programs, and burnout safeguards is critical to halt the talent drain and sustain culture and performance.
