2 in 5 employees feel uncomfortable in the workplace

The modern workplace keeps on evolving and, naturally, workplace etiquette keeps changing with it. Where companies once had stricter rules around things like attire, working hours and office communication, greater flexibility and understanding now exist.

Although this allows many employees to worry less about certain conventions and focus more on things that have a direct impact on their productivity, ambiguity still surrounds the topic of workplace etiquette, which creates confusion. 😕

According to a recent study by The Harris Poll on behalf of Express Employment Professionals, 56 % of US jobseekers are confused about what is and isn’t acceptable workplace etiquette. Unsurprisingly, 41 % of the respondents also don’t feel comfortable being themselves in the workplace.

At the same time, another survey by the same researchers targeting hiring decision-makers showed that 76 % of leaders believe they place significant priority on encouraging employees to be authentic.

Given these numbers, there is a clear gap between employers’ perceptions and employee experience. So, what can be done to decrease the gap and ensure team members feel more comfortable bringing their “whole selves” to work?

  • Train managers to lead with empathy. It’s not enough to tell your employees they can talk to you; you need to inspire their trust through actions.

  • Host weekly or biweekly show-and-tell sessions, having leaders open up the discussion by sharing their own personal stories and displaying their humanity. 💭

  • Communicate and uphold company values as clearly and consistently as possible. A healthy culture eliminates fear, allowing people to feel freer.
